Feb.22 - Mar. 4


These past weeks we have been continuing to read and respond to our class novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. In recent writing, we imagined ourselves as the main character, Karana and wrote from her perspective. Have a look at the many descriptive words I was able to add to my letter/diary entry in our Celebration of Learning Assignment online. 



In Daily 4, we have been reading about other cultures related to our Social Studies topics: India, Tunisia, Ukraine, Peru and Blackfoot Nations. We are also reading books of choice in book clubs, studying spelling rules and exploring figures of speech.

In Science, grade threes have been studying rocks and minerals. We made crystals and did volcano artwork and poems.  Grade fours have completed a Waste Inventory to self-assess what they throw out in a day.



In Social Studies, Grade 3's have been completing research and slide presentations one of four cultures: Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine, India. Grade 4's have been learning about Indigenous culture of the past.

More About Unique Sock Day

On Monday March 14th staff and students at Tuscany School are invited to participate in Unique Sock Day.  This is a day for all of us to wear unique, fun, colorful socks to celebrate how unique each one of us is.  This day connects well with all of the work we have already been engaged in at our school focused on belonging, respecting differences and celebrating each individual's strengths and gifts they bring to the world.  

 

Tuscany's Unique Sock Day links up with internationally recognized World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) on March 21st (3/21) signifying a third copy of the 21st chromosome. In honor of that extra chromosome – and because chromosomes look like socks – people around the world wear fun, brightly colored and mismatched socks to show support and awareness for individuals with Down Syndrome AND to celebrate the similarities and differences that make us ALL unique.

This week back at school we started new topics in Social Studies and Science.  Grade 3s continue to learn about culture through hearing a story called, Westlandia, about a boy who invents his own culture. We are using that as a springboard for designing a culture of our own.  Grade 4s watched a video and read some old postcards from the past to think about what it may have been like to be an immigrant moving to Canada in the past. We are creating a postcard to take their viewpoint. In science, we started reading about fossils. We will look at earth science from the perspective of natural resources by studying rocks and minerals and the resources found in Alberta's Regions. In Language Arts we started listening to a new novel, "Island of the Blue Dolphins." In this story we will learn how early explorers impacted the indigenous people, from the perspective of the main character, Karana. Feb. 7 - 16

 These past weeks have been filled with fun activities including rocks study, fossil "making", Valentines exchange and Carnaval!   In reading we continued with book clubs, Get Epic, and Island of the Blue Dolphins.  In writing we wrote a letter from the perspective of Karana (the main character in Island of the Blue Dolphins). Look for our revisions and typed versions in our upcoming Celebration of Learning. We have been doing spelling and word work centres during Daily 4 too! In math, we continued with multiplication practice. In science, grade 3's studied the three types of rocks while grade 4's learned more about fossils and fossil fuels.  In social studies, grade 3's finished and presented their culture designs while grade 4's completed and presented their Alberta Regions research.  We all "made" fossils by pressing artifacts into clay. May 23 - June 10, 2022

The highlights of these past weeks include writing creative stories, beginning new science units in building things, doing the CBE Amazing Race, Inline Skating and the Bike to School Challenge. Grade 3s are writing Fractured Fairytales, Grade 4s are writing Pixar inspired stories.  We are looking forward to sharing them soon! We welcomed 2 new students to our class, Malika and Adam! In Math we started learning about 2D Shapes and 3D solids. We built models from paper nets and toothpicks with plasticine. Grade 3s built bridges and Grade 4s did the bucket challenge with Simple Machines. We played chess! We also took a field trip to Glenbow Ranch connected to our units in Lifecycles of Plants and Animals and presented our research to classmates.  And we helped our Kindergarten buddies with their reading and writing! Our class did a great job of biking to school! Luke won the Bike to School Draw Prize of a helmet and water bottle! Congratulations! See the photos below!
