May 9 - 19

This week we heard more of the story, Wish Tree. We discussed the idea of whether trees can communicate and we created our own Wish tree. We each wrote a wish, recorded it and we tied it to the tree outside our classroom. 


In science, we continued with our Coulee plant and animal research which we are created in Google slides. Have a look at my presentation to see what I learned!



In science, we also completed our TomatoSphere experiment and entered our results. We found out that the R seeds had gone to space but all the seeds germinated! So we learned that seeds that have travelled to space will germinate!

We explored Animal Specimen centres to see if we could identify birds from their feathers and nests, put the lifecycles of animals in order and use science vocabulary.

 






In Social Studies, Grade 4s started research about an important Albertan while Grade 3s started a design challenge to create a helping organization. See the pictures of logos grade 3s designed. In writing, Grade 4s completed posters of their story characters and a persuasive paragraph on the Fur Trade while Grade3s completed their Sustainable Development Goal persuasive paragraph and started a fractured Faurytale.


We also started the CBE Amazing Race Challenge! This week we journeyed to Peru and did the Chuasqui Dash and climbed Machu Picchu! We remembered the message, "The journey is the reward!" and we even completed the Rainbow Bonus Challenge! We brought in fruit in all the colors of the rainbow and learned about why eating colorful fruits and vegetables is healthy for you! In gym, we also developed our badminton and volleyball skills.

This week back at school we started new topics in Social Studies and Science.  Grade 3s continue to learn about culture through hearing a story called, Westlandia, about a boy who invents his own culture. We are using that as a springboard for designing a culture of our own.  Grade 4s watched a video and read some old postcards from the past to think about what it may have been like to be an immigrant moving to Canada in the past. We are creating a postcard to take their viewpoint. In science, we started reading about fossils. We will look at earth science from the perspective of natural resources by studying rocks and minerals and the resources found in Alberta's Regions. In Language Arts we started listening to a new novel, "Island of the Blue Dolphins." In this story we will learn how early explorers impacted the indigenous people, from the perspective of the main character, Karana. Feb. 7 - 16

 These past weeks have been filled with fun activities including rocks study, fossil "making", Valentines exchange and Carnaval!   In reading we continued with book clubs, Get Epic, and Island of the Blue Dolphins.  In writing we wrote a letter from the perspective of Karana (the main character in Island of the Blue Dolphins). Look for our revisions and typed versions in our upcoming Celebration of Learning. We have been doing spelling and word work centres during Daily 4 too! In math, we continued with multiplication practice. In science, grade 3's studied the three types of rocks while grade 4's learned more about fossils and fossil fuels.  In social studies, grade 3's finished and presented their culture designs while grade 4's completed and presented their Alberta Regions research.  We all "made" fossils by pressing artifacts into clay. May 23 - June 10, 2022

The highlights of these past weeks include writing creative stories, beginning new science units in building things, doing the CBE Amazing Race, Inline Skating and the Bike to School Challenge. Grade 3s are writing Fractured Fairytales, Grade 4s are writing Pixar inspired stories.  We are looking forward to sharing them soon! We welcomed 2 new students to our class, Malika and Adam! In Math we started learning about 2D Shapes and 3D solids. We built models from paper nets and toothpicks with plasticine. Grade 3s built bridges and Grade 4s did the bucket challenge with Simple Machines. We played chess! We also took a field trip to Glenbow Ranch connected to our units in Lifecycles of Plants and Animals and presented our research to classmates.  And we helped our Kindergarten buddies with their reading and writing! Our class did a great job of biking to school! Luke won the Bike to School Draw Prize of a helmet and water bottle! Congratulations! See the photos below!
